Chapter Nine

I waited for a couple of seconds just in the hopes that maybe I was half-asleep and in the midst of a really shit dream.

Nope.

It was definitely there. The whirring sound that could only mean everyone’s last choice of dinner party guests had arrived.

“Jess, Grace, Ellen,” I whispered as I sprang to my feet. “Get the fuck up.”

“Huh?” Jess grumbled, but I saw realization jolt her straight back into leader mode. “Get your bags and whatever else you need. Keep it light. If it’s not essential, it’s not coming with us. No, Grace, not the sleeping bag, it’ll slow us down. Ellen, get up, now.”

I could see how she’d managed to get so high up in the resistance. There wasn’t an ounce of fear in her voice, it was calm, level, and firm. She quickly retied her hair and scraped it all up into a bundle on top of her head, and then she pulled out her knife and moved to the little side door. I watched her press her ear to the door, and Mom’s crease in the middle of her forehead had returned.

“Have you got an exit plan?” I asked.

“Not exactly,” Jess admitted. “I know this place fairly well, but I don’t know if the NSS has anyone in town, or where the Silver Ones might be going. Fuck, I can’t believe I nearly forgot.”

Jess put her knife away and sprinted to a massive red toolbox. She wheeled it out the way and revealed a trunk half buried in the floor of the garage. It looked like someone had crudely dug this hole with a pickaxe of something, and the trunk only just fit. My resourceful sister yanked open the beaten-up leather case and revealed another AR-15 and a handful of mags.

“Here.” She thrust two full magazines at me and then shoved a couple more into her jacket pockets. “I hope you know how to use that thing.”

“Yeah, it’s a fucking hat stand, right?” My voice dripped with sarcasm. “Now, can we get serious? This place has no widows, how are we going to know if we get surrounded?”

“We won’t,” Jess replied as her frown deepened. “We need to get out of here, now.”

“Glad we’re on the same page,” I said and rushed to the garage door to listen.

It seemed like the Silvers had flown over us, but I couldn’t tell if they’d gone for good or if they were searching for something. Either way, now seemed like the best chance we had of escaping.

Jess opened the side door and peered out into the darkness.

“I don’t see anything,” she whispered. “Come on, let’s move.”

I let my sister take the lead since she knew this place, and I covered the rear, so Ellen and Grace were protected on either side. We ran out into the night toward the town, and I could feel the tension mounting inside me.

The sky was clear, and the smattering of stars and bright moon provided some visibility. But even though it was the dead of night, I felt so exposed.
